Mother’s Day is coming up, so I put together a list of beautiful handmade Mother’s Day gift ideas. I focused on DIY gift ideas that are beautiful, but also a few that are useful or consumable for the practical Moms who don’t want more “stuff”. I also suggested some pairings to combine different handmade gifts to make a homemade gift basket, and also some ideas of things you can purchase to supplement each handmade gift if you choose.
DIY Gemstone Soap
Handmade soap is always a treat and I love my gem stone soap tutorial because the glycerin base I recommend is organic (and lathers so well), plus you can scent with any of Mom’s favorite essential oils – and each bar is unique and crafted with love. Plus it’s a consumable – perfect for Mom’s who don’t want any more clutter! You can also check out my Lake Superior inspired DIY soap and, for a real spa treat, combine with my DIY foot scrub recipe (in a pretty jar) and DIY shower melts. If you’re looking for a BIGGER gift, put in all in a gift basket with some delicious gourmet chocolate and pretty bathroom hand towels for a total spa vibe! (Spas have chocolate, right? I’ve literally never been to one).
DIY Wood Burned Spoons
Wood burning is a lot of fun and it’s so easy to create custom wood burned spoons (or a wood trivet or cutting board – or all three), with a message that will make Mom think of you every time she cooks. Pair with some gourmet salt blends, or your best homemade jam, and a beautiful tea towel (LOVE these striped turquoise ones) for a lovely and useful gift basket. If your Mom loves turquoise like I do, check out these gorgeous turquoise stoneware servings bowls.
DIY Tea Cozy
If Mom’s a tea drinker, pair her favorite teas with a handmade tea cozy, sure to put a smile on her face every time she enjoys a cuppa. For an extra sweet gift, add some local honey, homemade tea cookies, or a handmade pottery mug or new tea pot (I love this copper one).
DIY Tea Towel
Hand dyed fabric becomes a thoughtful gift when sewn into a beautiful tea towel. Pair with a homemade mason jar filled with your best brownie mix and wood burned wood spoon for a sweet kitchen themed set of treats. I also love this pink frying pan because it’s just too cute.
DIY Scented Candle
Upcycle vintage pieces and make Mom a collection of beautiful, one-of-a-kind scented candles. Pair with a book she’s been meaning to buy – or magazine subscription – and a cozy pair of socks or throw (this nautical blue stripe tassel throw is super cute and boho) for the perfect hygge gift.
DIY Gemstone Earrings
Pair your birthstone and hers and make her a pair of custom gemstone earrings – it’s surprisingly easy! You can supplement this gift with something else, like this handmade clutch spotted on Etsy (tuck the earrings inside for a cute surprise).
DIY Doily Throw Pillow
Take a cherished doily or linen gathering dust and turn it into a sentimental and beautiful throw pillow. Click here for my step-by-step tutorial for sewing a pillow.
DIY Ribbon Brooch
Create this beautiful and one of a kind brooch for Mom’s spring coat. It’s easy to make using wired ribbon. Pair with a beautiful scarf (I’m obsessed with this pale aqua hand dyed silk scarf) or pair of handmade earrings shared above.
DIY Vintage Pattern Storage Box
Photocopy special patterns, old photographs, letters or kids’ art, and decoupage them onto a sturdy wood box. Create a special keepsake box, sewing box or jewelry box, adorned with something special! Tuck this personalized gold initial necklace inside for a fun surprise.
DIY Alcohol Ink Coasters
Add some glam to Mom’s table with these one-of-a-kind marbled coasters. (And these glasses would look cute with them).
DIY Beaded Bracelet
Create a custom beaded bracelet – bonus points for upcycling a special piece Mom never wears in a fresh new way, or combining the family birthstones. (Here’s a perfect turquoise gift box to make it feel special).
DIY Gemstone Magnets
Tell Mom she’s a gem by making these DIY resin gemstone magnets – make them in the color of her birthstone for a customized gift, and package it with some kid’s art if you can.
DIY Beaded Napkin Rings
For a Mom who likes to entertain, craft these beautiful beaded napkin rings she can use at the next family dinner. Pair with some hand dyed or hand sewn cloth napkins and a great bottle of wine.
DIY Ice Dyed Throw
Add some color to Mom’s decor with a hand dyed throw for the end of her bed.
DIY Arm Knit Throw
Or, for a cozier vibe, create an easy – and on-trend – arm knit throw for Mom, or perhaps buy her the kit with instructions and promise to make it together one afternoon!
