Coastal Summer Mantel Decor

It’s finally time for summer decorating, so I put together this easy coastal summer mantel decor at my Mom’s place!  I’m also sharing links to more summer mantel decor ideas, so keep reading.

I am so thrilled that my Mom’s apartment has this beautiful fireplace (which I painted this chalky blue), because the fireplace in my house doesn’t really have a mantel I can use for seasonal decorating.  Hers is much easier to decorate, so we’re having a lot of fun creating seasonal mantel looks.  For this coastal summer mantel decor, I shopped my own house (excluding the stack of books) so it was also a nice – and free – way to freshen up my Mom’s space.  We’re always trading vintage and home decor pieces back and forth (sometimes against my will, lol).

For this year’s summer fireplace mantel decorating, I wanted to keep it light and airy.  Unfortunately nothing is really flowering or in bloom where I live – the buds are just starting to green up – so I grabbed these faux lamb’s ear plants I’ve had for awhile.  They look great in vintage turquoise McCoy planter pots from my collection – the color really pops against the dark blue fireplace.  I added a stack of books, in shades of blue, from Mom’s bookshelves for a little height and visual interest.

The pretty white vase from my home decor stash and I love the contrast against the blue.  Then I lent my Mom this pretty blue glass bird sculpture from FinnStyle.

I also brought over a really cool piece of driftwood – the perfect perch for my Mom’s epic collection of air plants.  I have been so unlucky keeping these alive, but they really flourish in my Mom’s care!  The final piece was this cute lantern – it runs on a battery and I’ve been using it in our sailboat, but we haven’t opened up the boat for the year so it was still in my closet.  Isn’t it the cutest?  I love how it adds a little nautical touch.

I loved layering in different shades of blue, teal, and aqua against my Mom’s dark blue fireplace.  My faux fiddle leaf fig also made its way to her place, awhile ago, and it looks great here.  Against her will, because she doesn’t like it for some reason, I also added a large floor vase she made (!).  It’s just really neat, I couldn’t resist.  I also couldn’t resist adding some vintage wicker pieces she has thrifted over the years because nothing says “summer,” like wicker and rattan!

Coastal Summer Mantel Decor

Things are still closed here so we can’t thrift or go to any home decor stores – or any non-essential stores.  Hopefully it will be safe to do so soon, because I have not been thrifting in so long!  Shopping my house to create this fresh coastal summer mantel decor for my Mom reminded me how much I love finding vintage treasures.  But clearly, I don’t have a shortage of pretty pieces to decorate with, haha, so this was a fun challenge to use what I had and not look for something new.

Thanks for letting me share this coastal summer mantel decor with you!  Hopefully it sparks some ideas…

Thank you! My Mom lives in a city beside the same lake, so coastal is fitting for her place too!

The driftwood (so envious you can find it nearby) and the lantern shouts summer to me. I had the impression that the decor swap on the sly was more in the other direction–from hers to yours😁

Haha, I think it seems that way because I’ve only shared a couple of angles of her place. She’s secretly giving a home to some of my Lotte lamps, a MCM repro arm chair, a vintage side table, plant stands, artwork, my treadle sewing machine desk, and lots of smaller pieces. Plus some things I’ve thrifted, brought over to show her on my way home, but they stopped there along the route and I never saw them again, lol…

I loved everything! I’m trying to find the inspiration to make a couple diy wall art pieces for my dining area. Did you diy yours?

    • June 16, 2021 / 12:56 pm

Thank you! Yes, I did paint the art – I just layered soft vertical stripes of color with an artist’s brush. I painted a layer of thicker stripes in darker hues and then once it dried, I layered on lighter stripes and let some color peek through. I have some DIY art tutorials in my DIY project gallery. It’s really fun, I think you’ll really enjoy painting your own wall art pieces!
