Sometimes it just takes the right size basket, the perfect mug rack, or a pretty enough storage system to make organizing “click”. Hopefully you find some helpful DIY projects for organizing from this list. If you need more inspiration, I have an entire Pinterest board dedicated to cleaning hacks, organizing DIYs, and de-cluttering tips!
If your mug collection has become overwhelming, what about making a cute DIY mug rack? Make it a rule that you only keep as many mugs as pegs and that will forever keep a collection in check – and located conveniently by the coffee machine! (This DIY coffee mug rack project is from The House of Wood).
DIY Glass Jar Catch All Project
I love that some brands of yogurt now come in little glass jars – some companies even sell lids so they can be used again and again (I used them in my DIY body butter post here). Grab a bunch, paint them, and use them to corral odds and ends (like this tutorial from I Spy DIY). This is THE cutest way to beat that overwhelming junk drawer once and for all.
DIY Woven Leather Storage Basket
If you can’t find the right size basket, whether it’s to store blankets, old newspapers, or dogs toys, just make your own! This leather basket DIY project from Hello Nest is so inventive.
If you prefer wire mesh bins, The DIY Mommy has a great tutorial for how to make DIY wire mesh bins, perfect for creating that IDEAL bin size for anywhere you need to corral stuff. I love bins for storage because it puts a cap on how much I can keep (and buy). I have bins for so many things: winter scarves, mittens, hats, dog toys, toiletries – pretty much everything. It keeps everything in order and together plus, if the bins get too full I reassess and purge – although knowing my scarf bin is full totally keeps me from buying new ones in the first place.
DIY Plywood Storage Bin with Lid
If closed storage is more your style, check out how Hubby and I made these walnut boxes with lids and handles for our bedside tables. They help us hide books and other bedroom clutter so the bedroom feel airier and cleaner.
For little stuff, you can make these easy DIY rope bowls (from Paper & Stitch) – keep one to corral keys, pocket change, jewelry…
If your kitchen needs organizing helps, make your own kitchen utensil holder (from A Beautiful Mess) – I love this project because you can customize the size and style and free up lots of drawer space.
Get bills and mail off your desk or kitchen counters and sorted with painted wall pockets like Emily Henderson. Never lose a receipt again!
If clothes and purses are ending up on the floor, whip up as many of these gorgeous DIY wood wall hooks (from Paper & Stitch) that you need! They would be cute in a kitchen, to hang aprons and tea towels too. I like the fact that when they’re not in use, they look like a little art installation.
Keep those clothespins handy and all in one place, with this DIY fabric clothespin holder. You can make many more of these, and use them to hold hair accessories in the bathroom, garbage bags in the kitchen, or anything else you want to keep at arm’s reach and organized!
If a pile of cords and devices is driving you bonkers, make this DIY wood charging station (from Tidbits) with a hidden cubby to hide cords and cables out of view to control that visual clutter and keep devices close at hand.
Keep jewelry organized – and turn it into art – with this easy DIY jewelry display from ctrl + create. It will motivate you to only keep your favorite pieces!
To maximize magazine storage – and reduce visual clutter – instead of lining up a million magazine files, we made our own custom magazine storage bins to fit into my IKEA Expedit perfectly! Four years later and they’re still one of my favorite DIY projects for organizing!
I’ve been thinking of making a little DIY desk organizer (like this one from Curbly). My office is pretty streamlined and most of what I do is online so I’ve just kept a little dish to hold a pen and some post it notes, but I think I’d like something a tiny bit bigger just to corral my to-do list and some little office odds and sods.
Make sure every key is in its place and accounted for with this DIY modern key holder from Fancoise et Moi.
