Whether you have a small outdoor space (but sometimes find yourself in need of more options for seating and entertaining) or you have lots of room (but still crave more flexibility in your outdoor seating options), you’ll be interested in my Transformer Table Modular Outdoor Sofa Review. From the makers of Transformer Table (a modular furniture company you might have seen on season 13 of Dragon’s Den!), this compact modular outdoor sofa set can be configured multiple ways to suit your entertaining and lounging needs. I was provided the Transformer Patio Conversation Set – Modular 3 Piece to 5, but was not paid or prompted to provide a positive review. Let me show you how it works, why we like the modular concept, and share my honest thoughts on the design and quality.
Hubby and I love having lots of seating options around our property. Once winter (finally) ends and summer is here, we make the most of the warm days and move around the property as the sun does. We have a little sitting area at the front of the house – my designated chicken-watching spot. I think this spot might end up being where the new modular sofa lives when we don’t need it for entertaining. It’s always the hottest, sunniest spot and it’s an arms reach from the fresh raspberries:
On the other side of the house, down by the water’s edge, we can easily seat 6 by the fire pit. But because we have burning limitations, we tend to only congregate here in the evenings.
On the deck, facing the lake, you’ll find two loungers and our DIY patio table. Before receiving our new Transformer Table Modular Outdoor Sofa, I didn’t think we could FIT an outdoor sofa here. I always wanted one, but they were too large for this space. Many were so high they would have blocked the view – and most of them would have taken up the whole length of the deck.
That’s why I love this new modular outdoor sofa set so much. Not only is it light enough to move around our outdoor areas whenever we need it, in its most compact arrangement, the Modular 3-5 Piece Set consists of two chairs and a coffee table (with a cushion to convert it to an ottoman):
Hidden behind each of the chairs is a another arm-less chair and this pair of hidden chairs, combined with the original pair (which have removable arms) and ottoman/coffee table, can be reconfigured multiple ways. Here’s Hubby sliding out one of the bonus chairs from behind the original chair:
Under the ottoman and bonus chairs are also storage for the extra cushions. In less than two minutes, two chairs become four:
The modular pieces are held together with simple U clips, allowing for quick reconfiguration to create outdoor sofas and chaise lounges as well. As I mentioned, the two main chairs have removable arms, which snap off with ease:
You can pull out the extra two arm-less chairs, remove two of the arms from the original pair of chairs – and in minutes you have an outdoor sofa and two chairs:
Or, you can rearrange the original chair, bonus chair, and ottoman to make one big long chaise lounge, for maximum summer lounging:
You can also combine all of the chairs to make a four-seater sofa – even placing the ottoman in between for extra length (and a handy place for drinks and snacks). With larger sets, you can expand the seating even more. This entire set was shipped in one large box and took about twenty minutes to unpack and assemble. These pieces are really great quality, with comfortable, generously sized cushions:
The color choices are beige wicker and cushion or grey wicker and cushion. My first choice was grey, which was sold out, but the beige is actually lovely and a lot richer than the photos online suggest. While the set is easy to manoeuvre around, it still feels solid and well built. Underneath the resin “wicker” is a hand-welded heavy gauge all-aluminium frame. The tight, hand-woven resin material is very sturdy, but be careful when sliding it around during re-configuring as it can get scratched/scuffed. So far, this set hasn’t been tossed around by the extreme winds here, on the shores of Lake Superior.
Living lakeside, I don’t like to clutter my deck with outdoor furniture because then it blocks our living room and dining room view. So I like that this sofa is designed with a lower back – but you may not find it’s the loungiest when you’re just sitting upright. The seats are deep and wide, but the backs are fairly low (check out the website for exact measurements). So, in my opinion, when configured as chairs, this set is definitely great for a party or – like the name says! – conversation. But I will be honest and say that I wouldn’t spend a day reading in one of these chairs – it’s not that kind of chair. BUT – if you do want to lounge, once you have converted this set to a sectional or lounger shape, then I’d say you can comfortably recline the day away. I have taken a nap on the big 4-seater sofa set up and it’s super comfy because the cushions are plush and offer lots of support. So there’s definitely versatility in this set and you can make it work for any outdoor setting or activity, but just be aware of the measurements. Below you’ll find hubby for scale (he’s around 5 foot 11-ish).
If you’d like to see this modular outdoor sofa set in action, I will share an Instagram Reel and TikTok today to show you exactly how easy it is to reconfigure these pieces.
And when I saw we’re committed to having various places to relax and lounge, I wasn’t kidding! This year we also bought a roll in dock. While we do, sort of, use it for our little turquoise boat and also getting on/off our stand up paddle boards, 99% of its use is simply another place to hang out! We love spending a day on the dock reading and listening to the waves lap. So I’m probably the best person to review outdoor furniture – sitting in it is kind of my main hobby.
Ultimately, I love that this new modular sofa set offers us even more flexibility in a compact package. As you can see, our outdoor spaces are not huge (and we lack a storage area to put a lot of outdoor furniture), so this is such a brilliant solution for us!
