Today I’m sharing the final before/after of our garage makeover because the last time you saw it, we hadn’t yet installed the new copper outdoor lights, or replaced the huge white motion light with a sleeker black version – plus the garage is just 10x cuter with snow on it (that means it’s currently 100x cuter because we got a MASSIVE heaping helping of snow after I took these photos).
Here’s how the garage looked last time you saw it:
And here’s the real before:
And now, with our new copper outdoor lights:
Lighting is like jewelry for the home – it really completes a look! As the house was getting an exterior facelift this summer/fall/winter, we tackled our own mini makeover on the garage so it would match the house. One of our neighbors recently asked if we got new siding/soffit for the garage too, so that’s a sign that our DIY makeover was a success! If you missed the progress, you can get caught up here:

Becuase we chose a copper finish for our new metal roof, I’ve been tying in copper accents (like in the cute mural I created for the garage door). But when I was shopping for new exterior lights, I originally shortlisted matte black fixtures, thinking they would look good with the new black windows and soffit/fascia, but then I found this beautiful copper ferry light. I shared all of my options in a poll on Instagram stories and these copper ferry lights were a CLEAR winner – everyone loved them. After I made my choice, I reached out to Westinghouse Lighting and asked if they’d like to collaborate. They generously sent me three of the copper outdoor lights, as well as the filament LED light bulbs, which look SO much better than a twisty fluorescent bulb. My love for incandescent bulbs runs deep and these look like incandescent bulbs, but they’re much more energy efficient – plus an LED bulb can last up to 20 years!
Now that I see them installed on the house and garage, it’s clear that these copper outdoor lights were the perfect choice. I think black would have been lost on the dark exterior, but the copper gleams and matches the roof SO perfectly. Having the same copper light on both buildings really ties everything together too. When we moved to Lake Superior, I was so resistant to nautical designs but lately I’ve been embracing some coastal vibes. The caged design of these copper lights has a really modern coastal style and the clear seeded hand blown glass adds a nice texture.
It’s one thing for me to say I love these copper ferry lights – I picked them! But I have gotten so many compliments on them from neighbors and friends. They are a really great size and scale (the ferry light is just over 17″ tall and 8″ wide!) so people tend to notice them. I wish I had filmed the reaction from the siding installers when I unveiled them (Handy Hubby and I installed this one, but they installed the house lights for us). There was a lot of ooohing and aaaahing and it was super cute because the youngest guy – who was just so enthusiastic and positive all the time – was so enamored with how these lights “look like they belong on a ship, which is so cool because we live on Lake Superior”. I get the impression he thought the coastal style was a happy coincidence and not something I searched high and low to find.
The weather resistant construction and washed copper finish have already withstood some harsh weather because we had a really rainy fall and so far we’re experiencing a blisteringly cold winter, so I think the company’s promise of long lasting durability is true (there’s a five year warranty on these copper lights). Westinghouse Lighting is a family-owned business, and the only global company that carries a full line of lighting fixtures, ceiling fans, light bulbs, and lighting accessories, and they have a reputation for top-notch customer service and great quality products.
If you like this copper ferry light, it also comes in an outdoor pendant version – which would have been so cool in the carport if I didn’t have to squeeze my massive truck in there – and both styles are also available in brushed nickel with frosted glass. Westinghouse Lighting also offers other outdoor light styles in a copper finish, like the Emma Jane. Huge thanks to Westinghouse Lighting for helping me add some more copper sparkle to the garage and house exterior – I’ll be sharing a long-awaited update of the house exterior and window shenanigans soon so you can get a better look at the copper ferry lights against our new metal siding too. If you follow me on Instagram you know one of the NEW windows spontaneously broke before I could even photograph it. Argh. This exterior reno will just not end!
The perfect choice, looks lovely. I’d hide that black motion light that’s over the door to perhaps under the eaves at the side of it. It fights with the new one even though its black.

Thanks so much! The black motion light is in a good spot for it to function well, plus I don’t want to have to move the wiring/patch the hole in the siding.
Fantastic! Love the roofing material and the light is a unique touch.

Thank you! I’ve got some more photos to share of the whole house exterior soon.
That light is gorgeous… But it’s the garage door that I love! Can’t get over how you transformed that ho-hum functional building into something really fun and creative.

Thank you, I’m so happy you like it! I’m so thrilled with the how the garage turned out and I tried to keep it as not-weird as possible. You can’t see the building from the road, but still neighbors have popped over to say they like it, which is nice. I’d hate to be the one dragging down property values lol. I wish I could accurately capture how beautiful the copper fixture and shimmery mural paint are when the sun shines on them – it brightens even the snowiest days.
Take a look at http://www.ootlier.com, the website of a fabulous Scots photographer named Tom Barr to see another reason why I love the garage door so much. He’s done a series of works called “Latitude” that latches onto that same light-over-water theme. So glad you have neighbors who appreciate your creativity.
