I’ve got 9 peppermint wreath ideas to get you in the holiday spirit. Since finally making a Halloween wreath, I’m a little addicted to DIY wreaths. I like the idea of adding some personality to our condo-issued orange front door. I spent the other night looking for inspiration, then I spotted a peppermint wreath and my world fell apart. See? I genuinely did get on the red and white bandwagon, but I’m holding off on making this wreath until I can have a turquoise front door (stupid condo). While I dream up another wreath idea, can we just take a moment to marvel at how many peppermint wreaths are out there?

Making a wreath like this is simple, you just need:
- bulk bag of red/white peppermint candies (try bulk food places to reduce plastic)
- foam wreath form
- epoxy glue (very strong hold)
- red and white striped bow (optional – aqua would be cute too!)

Haha. Peppermint was never really a weakness for my sweet tooth–though the wreath is gorg!–but I have a health condition that prevents me from eating sugar regularly. If it gets particularly bad, I even have to give up fruit! And yeah, flour and starches are out. Let me tell you, it is harrrrddd. BUT totally doable.:) We have gotten really creative with our dishes and Chris keeps me strong. Every once in awhile, even I sneak in a treat.
I have seen you blog about recipes before, now I will have to pay closer attention knowing you don't eat sugar or other starches! You might be my go-to source for easy recipe ideas. Make something with chicken soon, lol 😉
Oh Tanya!!! My husband has issues with different levels of his sugars but no diabetes. He has changed his diet so much and mostly cut out sodas. But yes he wants to change his eating habits for the better. So he is going cold turkey and no more sugars or fast food come the new year. I dont eat fast food anymore and he is always running to the hamburger joint instead of the grocery store. I am sure you can do it ! Good luck. On the wreath…i love that you want to make your own. I wish I consumed a lot of daily sugar, so it'd be easy to figure out what to cut out. But I don't drink cola or put sugar in my coffee or tea. I'm not a regular sugar-eater, but when I do, I'll bake a batch of cookies and eat them all, lol. Or I eat a lot of "hidden" sugars (like white bread). Thanks for the vote of confidence! LOL, that is so my husband. He is a cookie monster!!Me on the other hand, I have some sorta sugar gene and can live on sugar alone. Have most of my life,lol. My doctor has said I can eat whatever I want that I am a freak of nature and don't really gain weight from it or have any health issues from it. I am soooo jealous. When I worked as a historical re-enactor, I baked bread in a brick oven and it was the most delicious thing ever. I once brought over a hot loaf for a friend, who ate the whole 2lb loaf in about 5 minutes. I thought she was so amazing, being able to eat that much, until she proceeded to double over in pain! I think she took the next day of work, lol. I wish I could have an iron stomach and immunity to sugar. Sigh . . . Mmmmm, cookies! (Have to use the voice)
Oooh – pretty! We have a turquoise front door and the fall feathers wreath is still hanging on it, ha! I looked at wreaths at the craft store the other day but they were all hideous, and I knew if I wanted something I'd have to make it. So… no wreath this year it looks like! I hear you on the sugar – diabetes runs in my family too. And my doctors think I may be gluten sensitive even though tests come back negative for celiac. Of course, I'm stuffing my face with a white-bread wrap sandwich right now, so…I haven't progressed very far in my commitment to eat better. That's what new years are for, right?

love those peppermint wreaths- how did pinterest fail me? I didn't see these before. I would love this on my door but I doubt I will have time to make one at this stage of the game. But could you imagine how lovely on a turquoise door? I've become enamoured with turquoise and red for christmas decor- I may have to do that next year. No advice on cutting sugar- I would like to do the same even though I don't eat much obvious sugar (but I do have it in my coffee in the morning) however it really is hidden in many items as you say- breads/starches, condiments, chocolate (haha)… how could I give up chocolate?

For some reason, Pinterest doesn't always work for me here. It is really strange but this internet is subpar at best. Ooo the peppermint wreathes are so pretty! Image though how many people knocking at your door would have just a teeny lick on that??? (I know I would…) As far as sugars and starches go – our house rules are "everything in moderation", and that's the way it's always been!
Haha! It would be funny to spot the mailman trying to pry one off (I know he would). I do agree everything in moderation is such a good way to go. My problem is, sometimes I don't even realize what counts as sugar – not a lot of people do. A diabetic meal at a hospital in Hungary consists of bread and potatoes! SO bad. So I think I need something drastic to get a better grasp on my sugar intake. We'll see though!
My fella and I gave up sugar in August. We started while I was on vacation because I thought that would make it easier for me to adjust (I used to snack a lot at work.)Honestly? I was totally hooked on sugar. I craved it all the time. The first week was hard. It was summer. Hot – ice cream weather. But after that – I got used to it pretty fast. The hardest thing for me was giving up sugar in my coffee. I don't drink a lot of coffee – one cup every morning – but it's how I start my day. It took me weeks and weeks to get over that. I reduced the amount of sugar at first but then fella found out and got mad at me because I hadn't ditched it entirely. I didn't do it for weight loss either – I did it because it messes with my body. I gave up sweets, greatly reduced alcohol intake and tried to limit foods that have sugar in them (pasta sauces, etc.) We stopped buying bread that had sugar in it (there are loads that have none and they are just as good) and I cut out yogurt (because I love the sugary kind.) We also don't substitute sugary foods with fake sugary foods ("diet" stuff) because you have to change your brain as well as your body. I didn't want to start having a bunch of weird chemical crap in my body instead of sugar. In October, I gave up taking sandwiches for lunch everyday and found a salad that I love. I eat the same lunch every day (which a lot of people couldn't do) but it always tastes great to me and fills me up.Here's the outcome – I've lost 25lbs since August. I no longer crave sugar. I still drink very minimally. We have treats on special occasions – our anniversary, if we're out for a special dinner, etc. But I don't crave it at all anymore. I can count on one hand the times that I've had cravings (and I think they are largely PMS based). I feel a million times better. I don't have blood sugar spikes and drops any more and I can be hungry longer than ever before because of the blood sugar thing. We still have some work to do on our snack choices and carb intake (at dinner mostly) but the best part is that I think I could eat this way for the rest of my life. And I have never thought that about any "diet". I say go for it. Just give your body time to adjust. Sorry this is such a long comment – a lot of people say that they could never give it up but I think that's because they are addicted to it. Like anything – it takes time – but you can readjust your taste buds. Fruit has never tasted so sweet to me!Kathryn

It's such a good point about not replacing sugar with fake sugar – that stuff is worse for our bodies! It's inspiring you no longer crave it. I just went out and bought a ton of fresh produce (the fridge was empty, lol) and am snacking on mangoes and blueberries when I feel snacky. The granola I bought before I left for Hungary is still around (Hubby hates it), and it has cane sugar so I will be cheating a bit because I don't want to just throw it out but I still think I can make this work! I've given up sugar for a few months…there is sugar in EVERYTHING, so you pretty much have to stick with fresh fruits and veggies, and I am not sure if you are a vegetarian? But roasted meats and fish are pretty easy go-to's for dinner.The thing is, now when I do eat sugar, I am very aware of it. I make a choice each time. Before I never thought twice about it. Not to mention, for the most part, it takes less to satisfy me!Good luck! You can do it!!!
I should add as long as you are prepared, it is no trouble at all!I mean, if you plan your meals, by the groceries, prep fresh veggie snacks and get rid of temptations, its smooth sailing…but you have to do the work to make it easier on yourself. If you just try and wing it when your 3pm snack attack surfaces, well – its a bit more difficult!! At least, this is how it works for me!
I am definitely an omnivore! We already eat pretty good dinners (lots of meat and veg) but it's the snacking and dessert area that is my weakness. But I went and bought a ton of fruit, plain yoghurt (no added sugar) and healthier snacking options. You are so right about being prepared!! Thanks for the motivation! I feel better already. I was eating a TON of white bread in Budapest because a little Mom and Pop bakery was right by my place and the smell of delicious bread wafting over was too much to take. A few days off the bread and I already feel better, but it might be in my head, lol.
