Treasure Hunting Report: Vintage Jewellery

I think I was a bit of a gloomy-Gus yesterday.  Prepping for my research trip keeps reminding me how behind I am.  Especially as I keep unearthing (and returning) unread library book after unread library book.  But I’m in high spirits today because I am almost 100% done preparing for the trip – and that includes packing!  So far, I’m (just barely) meeting my goal of one suitcase + carry-on.  I plan to share all the details about what I packed and how it works out.  But for now, I’m trying to pick a few, small, accessories to add.  Given that I have jewellery on the brain today, I thought it would be a good time to share some recent pirate-worthy treasures from my treasure hunting exploits – jewellery!

This adorable acorn-themed sterling silver brooch was claimed by you-know-who (*cough*Mom*cough) before I could even try it on.  She pinned it on a chic t-shirt, so the curve of the brooch followed the curve of the crew neck and it looked amazing.  She deserves it for her ingenuity.

I have a modest collection of vintage rhinestone jewellery, even some Sherman stunners, but they are sooo dressy I find it hard to wear them regularly.  When I spotted this cheery yellow brooch with the tiniest sprinkle of green/grey rhinestones, I knew it would be much more wearable.  Picture it on a grey cardigan for fall . . .

I bought this one for the same reason: a little sparkle, but not too much.

I’ve been on a brooch kick, I guess, because I also found two pairs of these Lucite bird pins, signed Buch and Deichmann, for $5.00 per pin.  It was perfect because Mom loves the warm brown pair and I heart the cranberry hued ones.  I already have a large, red parrot brooch (like this one) by the same Danish company, so I sense a collection forming.

If I’m being honest, I actually didn’t realize they were birds until Mom pointed it out.  I thought they were abstract-y swirly things and had planned on wearing them like this:

What a maroon.  But I’m now wearing them the right way:

Last but not least, a couple of shop-bound items for when we re-open.  We only sold one piece of jewellery (!) in our few weeks – none of the amber ended up selling.  But I think the timing needs to be different – maybe around the holidays might be a good time for jewellery sales.  I know once we’re open permanently, we’ll be able to sell more jewellery so I haven’t been deterred from buying jewellery for the shop.  These two gorgeous, rhinestone necklaces would be perfect for weddings.  The second one is something old and something blue.

Does anyone else find looking at sparkly/shiny things very relaxing? I think the calming effect explains my lifelong fascination with rocks and jewellery.  Looking at things that sparkle is my yoga.

Pretty.I totally think you can get away with wearing the birds in the abstract way you were planning on. They don't look like birds as much, but that's totally ok!

Happy to hear that, because I kind of like the swirly abstract way!

Oh gosh, thanks, but my skin is actually not that swell. I still break out and it gets kind of red and splotchy in places. It looks okay in this pic, but it is a combo of good lighting, a bit of a tan and also clinique makeup! I used a tinted moisturizer that has been discontinued and the replacement is heavier. Not sure what I'll do when the last tube runs out . . .

I fell in love with the acorn brooch the moment I saw it. I might have had to arm wrestle your mom for it. 🙂

Ha ha! I'll keep my eyes peeled for others. Although sterling silver, I think it's not uncommon. The company made jewellery for gift shops and this piece, although mid-century, wasn't very "fancy" at the time. I was a little disappointed, actually, when I did my research. Although it might be more rare for you, because if I remember correctly, this company is Canadian and also did the traditional maple leaf style jewellery.

The blue set is really pretty – it has a great patina to it and the shades of blue are really eye catching. It will be up for grabs when the shop re-opens!

Treasure Hunting Report: Vintage Treasures

I have been hoarding my thrifty finds and not sharing any pictures (or what I’ve learned) with my lovely readers.  So selfish!  Well, here’s a peek at a few thrifted treasures, but it’s just the tip of the iceberg.

1. I bought this Royal Norfolk Pottery piece (from the 1950s), for the tidy sum of $2.99 at Value Village.  I saw a similar one on Etsy for $15.00 or $20.00 but I’m less concerned about the value and more excited about how perfect the colours are for Mom’s place.

2. I also brought home this small, silver lustre Susie Cooper for Wedgwood tray, also from Value Village, for $8.99.  A bit steep for a thrift store find, yes, but Mom loves Susie Cooper and look what a trinket box with the same design is valued at.  A bell with the same pattern is priced at $90!  But I’m not selling it.  Mom already snagged it and uses it in her sewing room for straight pins.  How fancy.

3. You already caught a glimpse of my thrifty necklace, purchased at the Almonte Antique Market.  For $5.00, this turquoise necklace sure does make any outfit that little bit more happy.  You know I can be a bit of a snob when it comes to materials, but I actually like that this necklace is plastic.  It is so light and comfortable to wear.

4. I found this pretty, mid-century modern enamel dish at a yard sale for $1.  It looks like it is signed “Victoria,” so I am guessing this might have been a school art project in the 1960s. . . ?  For a little light reading on enamel, check out this article.

I already have an idea in mind: I think I might incorporate this into a DIY gift for my friend’s upcoming birthday.

5. At a church rummage sale I found this mid-century modern cast iron taper holder.  My treasure hunting partner in crime thought I was nutty for buying this, until I sent her this link for a similar (maybe identical?) candle holder.  I think knowing what it actually is helped her appreciate this purchase.  Now I just need some skinny tapers  Or an Etsy shop!

Even though I try really hard to edit what comes into the townhouse, I am starting to amass quite a few vintage and one of a kind treasures, so I’ve toyed with the idea of opening an Etsy shop to sell fun, retro finds and maybe even some handmade goods and artwork.  My Mom & I even came up with the perfect shop name and set about creating a shop until I found out the name was taken (but not being used).  That totally knocked the wind out of my sails and I temporarily abandoned the idea.  But now I’m thinking about it again . . . wait until you see the rest of my thrifted purchases!   Too much for one thrifty gal, even if my Mom does ferret away some of it.

Thanks! It is so gleamy in real life, not sure I captured the lustre on camera. It's so fun to find little treasures like this.

I will have to tell my Mom, because that is a favorite find of hers too (aside from the Susie C dish). You two really have to meet!

Amazing finds! I especially love the Susie Cooper piece and iron taper holder. You should open an Etsy shop! You have such a great eye for these treasures, I know you'd be a success.

A shop is free to set up, and listings aren't expensive – it's a minimal initial investment, and if it takes off, it takes off! If not, you're only out a few bucks, but gain an awesome vintage collection 😉 I say go for it! Nothing to lose! Have you read through the seller's handbook on there? It's crazy comprehensive (I haven't made it all the way through yet – as evidenced by my amazing product photos, gah!)

Crazy comprehensive, indeed! I read through some of it. I'm worried it will be a total time-suck. Thanks for the vote of confidence, I appreciate it 😉
